The official announcement on September 17, 2026, stated that eligible purchased Google Play Books e-books can be added to notebooks to ask questions based on their content and create study artifacts. Eligible books display Gemini Notebook on the Tools badge in their product details. Not all e-books are supported.
Confirm what recipients are able to do
According to official notes, to query books or generate artifacts in a shared notebook, recipients must also have purchased the eligible e-book.
This is not the same as saying "purchasing is always mandatory even just to read shared summaries." Distinguish between viewing, querying, and generating, and check which one applies to your intended shared usage. Furthermore, do not judge terms for distributing purchased book contents or generated outputs solely on whether the technical feature functions.
Administrators check three services
The announcement states that Gemini Notebook, Google Play, and Google Books must be enabled for the target users' organizational unit. For some education contracts, an exceptional route to assign books via Buy for Groups is also provided. Avoid assuming this is identical to a standard corporate purchasing flow.

If using it for an internal study session, the person in charge who has read the chapter should create questions where the correct answers and underlying supporting passages are known. Also evaluate whether readers can distinguish between "explanations from the book," "descriptions from internal documents," and "proposals suggested by AI."
Officially, combining purchased books with one's own materials is also introduced as a use case. There is no need to prohibit mixing itself, but cross-check the sources and publication scope to ensure notebooks containing internal-only materials are not shared externally.
We recommend summarizing initial evaluation results across answer accuracy, effort required to return to supporting evidence, purchaser qualification conditions, and sharing operational workflows. Please judge whether work time is reduced only after measuring and comparing the same task against regular reading.
