Google Chat introduces new Meetings section: a feature for centrally managing meeting chats

Table of contents · 7 items

Starting March 19, 2026, Google began the gradual rollout of an update that adds a new "Meetings" section to the conversation list in Google Chat.

Previously, meeting chats often got mixed in with direct messages, making them difficult to locate later. This new feature enables users to manage meeting-related conversations together in a dedicated section.

Background: Integrating Google Meet and Google Chat

Starting in late 2025, in-meeting messages from Google Meet began integrating directly with Google Chat. As a result, feedback and materials shared during a meeting remain accessible as shared conversations in Google Chat even after the meeting ends.

This integration also introduced several feature enhancements, including:

  • Emoji reactions to in-meeting messages
  • Direct file and image sharing within Google Meet
  • Chat threads that continue after meetings conclude

The new Meetings section takes this integration a step further, providing a structure that lets users organize and access meeting-related conversations efficiently.

What is the Meetings section?

The Meetings section is a dedicated group that can be added to your Google Chat conversation list. By consolidating past and upcoming meeting chats into a single section, users can quickly surface project discussions and meeting notes.

Key highlights include:

  • Automatic aggregation of meeting chats — Once a meeting ends, the in-meeting conversation automatically moves to this section
  • Streamlined follow-ups — Ongoing post-meeting discussions stay contained within the section
  • Flexible positioning — The section can be moved or removed freely within the conversation list

Activation steps

This feature is turned off by default, requiring individual users to opt in.

  1. In the Google Chat conversation list, click the three-dot menu (⋮) for any section
  2. Select "Create a meeting section"
  3. Click "Create"

Once enabled, the Meetings section appears below Direct Messages and Spaces. If no longer needed, it can be removed at any time.

Please note that when the feature becomes available, in-app banners or tooltips introducing the new capability may be displayed.

Administrator settings (continuous meeting chat)

Alongside this update, new administrative controls have been added to the Google Workspace Admin console.

Within the Admin console's Meet safety settings, a "Continuous meeting chat" setting has been introduced, enabling the following controls:

  • Set default status — Select "On by default" or "Off by default" across organizational units (OUs), configuration groups, or individual users
  • Control host modification — Choose whether meeting hosts can modify this setting for individual meetings or lock the default setting

This allows organizations to govern the ongoing retention and sharing of meeting chats in accordance with corporate information security policies.

Conclusion

The Meetings section in Google Chat simplifies managing meeting-related conversations more than ever. Particularly in today's remote and hybrid work environments, having a reliable mechanism for post-meeting follow-ups directly drives team productivity.

Companies that already use Google Workspace are encouraged to try this feature once it rolls out. Administrators are also advised to check the Continuous Meeting Chat settings in the Admin console.
